David Mateer, one of the oldest settlers in the county, died of paralysis, died at his home in Monroe on last Thursday, Aug. 29th. He has lived in this county for nearly a half century and has watched the county develop and grow. Having lived here for such a long time, his circle of friends was very large.
He was born in 1824, in County Down, Ireland and was just past eighty-three when he died. He was one of thirteen children and leaves a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Mrs. Jordan, who are both older than himself, his sister being 92 years old. These live in Monroe and were both present at the funeral.
He was married to Miss Mary Wearts, and to this union four children were born, two sons, Albert and Edgar, and two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Tool and Miss Jennie Mateer, all of whom were present during their father’s illness and at the funeral.
Mr. Mateer was one of the fifteen charter members of the Monroe United Presbyterian Church and has been connected with that church for forty-six years. He was a very faithful Christian man and his faith never wavered in times of trouble.
His life and influence will be greatly missed by the people of Monroe and especially by the United Presbyterian Church of that place.
