Dale R. Mallams, 78 of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, died Friday, October 10, 2008, at his home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph P. V. Phung officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Forest Home Cemetery. Born May 29, 1930, at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, IA, Dale Robert was the son of Miles Edgar and Ruth Gertrude Kopp Mallams. His education through 8th grade was at Sherman school, a one-room schoolhouse ½ mile from his home. He attended High School at New London and graduated in 1948 from Pleasant Lawn Consolidated High School. He attended Iowa Wesleyan College. On February 22, 1955, Dale married Joann Thornton at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.
A lifelong farmer in the Mt. Union area, Dale farmed with his father and his son. While farming, Dale was a co-owner of Pabco Fertilizer. He retired from farming with memories to last a lifetime. Dale also drove a school bus and worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. In 1999, he moved to Mt. Pleasant.
For 53 years, Dale’s life centered around his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a member of Beulah Church until its closing. Dale served in the National Guard for 12 ½ years, on the New London Farmers Co-op Board for 12 years and Farmers National Bank Board in Winfield for 27 years. He was a member of Farm Bureau and a former member of the Mt. Pleasant Masonic Lodge #8, A.F. and A.M. Dale enjoyed working the land and John Deere tractors. He liked telling jokes, bowling, good food, wintering in Florida, spending time with his pets, and having coffee with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Joann, two daughters, Shari J. (Dennis) Lyons of Monroe, Iowa, and Sheryl A. (Mark) Blair of Auburn, Alabama; one son, Steven D. (Ann) Mallams of Mt. Union, Iowa; one brother, Marvin B. (Phyllis) Mallams of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and two sisters, Marlene (Bob) Statler of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Janis (Dick) Roach of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Dale is also survived by eight grandchildren, Derek and Drew Lyons, Julie, Jessica and Jake Mallams, Ryan and Rachel Trummer and Jack Blair.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one grandchild, Daniel Lyons.
