Services Held
Services for Max Mahon of Newton were held Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. Rev. David Wendel officiated the services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Max passed away Thursday, February 28, 2002, at the USA Healthcare Newton of cardiac arrest.
Born August 25, 1906, in rural Albia, Max was the son of Francis E. and Elma (Duphorne). He graduated from Albia High School in 1925 and moved to Newton in 1926. On September 1, 1928, he married Edna Cecile Schermerhorn in Des Moines. Max worked for the Maytag Co. in tool and die machining for 46 years. He retired in 1972. After retiring from Maytag, he assisted Johnson-Reese Funeral Home for several years.
Max was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Blue Lodge #59, Newton Royal Arch Masons and Select Masons, Commander, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Eastern Star, White Shrine and a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Dwight Neff of Monroe and Maxine and Marvin Simpson of Newton; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Francis of Guyman, Oklahoma; two sisters, Reba Thomas of Topeka, Kansas, and Dorothy Hopkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and a sister.
