Born Near Newton
Lulu Elaine Wormley, daughter of Samuel and Susan Wormley, was born near Newton in the Wittemberg neighborhood, April 8, 1872. She was the third daughter and seventh child of a family of 12 children: George, Tom, John, Arminta, Sam, Cora, Lulu, Mary, Henry, Patience, Jay and David.
The great part of her life transpired here in this community. She spent her childhood days at her family's farm in the Wittemberg neighborhood, attending the country school nearby. She continued her education at Hazel Dell academy under the guidance of her oldest brother, George Wormley. Later she studied music and normal training at Ames, after which she came back to teach music and school in her community.
She was always an intense and active member of the schools and at age of 10 years she first expressed her Christian faith.
Married in 1896
Her marriage to Harry L. Kelly of Omaha, Nebr., March 18, 1896, took her to her new home in that city. To this union two children were born, Patience and William. In 1916, she and her family returned to Newton where they have since continued to reside.
Besides her husband and two children, Mrs. Lee Hanke of Newton and William E. Kelly of Cedar Rapids, she is survived by four sisters, Mrs. George O. Kelly of Newton, Mrs. Cora Hand of Newton, Mrs. Henry Korf of Newton and Mrs. Mary Harriman of Ames and four brothers, Tom Wormley of Buffalo, Mont., John Wormley of Kingsley, Ia., Jay Wormley and David Wormley both of the Wittemberg neighborhood.
