William Wesley Barber, age 53, passed away December 19, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital, Denver, Colorado. He had been fighting cancer for the past year.
Wes was born at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1955, and spent the first years of his life living in Monroe.
Wes earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from Colorado University and received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Temple University. Later he earned a teaching degree from Colorado University.
In his early years, Wes was active in Social Justice issues. He was an attorney for Legal Aid and later taught Middle School and High School in Pueblo and Denver, Colorado. He spent several years teaching at an alternative high school and teaching English to immigrant and minority children in Denver. At the time of his death, he was teaching English to children from war–torn countries from all over the world who had been living in refugee camps.
Wes is survived by his father, William P. Barber, his mother, Molly W. Barber and two sisters, Marla W. Larned and Sharil R. Catterson along with three nephews, Eric M. Larned, W. Christopher Larned, and Jeremiah F. Catterson, and also one niece, Chelsy K. Catterson.
