W. P. Barber Funeral Held Last Sunday
Many Paid Respects To One of Monroe’s Leading Citizens
One of the largest funerals ever held in Monroe was conducted last Sunday, May 5, when William Phineas Barber, well known Monroe lumberman, was laid to rest.
The Methodist Episcopal church, where the services were held, was packed to capacity, and the funeral procession which was several blocks in length was made up of men and women of all walks of life who paid their last respects to a Monroe man who was beloved by all who knew him.
The services at the church were conducted by Rev. Raoul R. Moser, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, assisted by Rev. A. W. Nickel, pastor of the Monroe United Presbyterian Church.
The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Moser who took as his text “For he was a good man” which was found in Luke’s story of Barnabas in the Acts of the Apostles, 11:24.
A Good Man
The minister dwelt upon his text and portrayed to his listeners the fact that the man who lay before him was “a good man” and that he left a heritage to all who knew him.
He eulogized W. P. Barber for the many good deeds which he had done in the community in which he had lived since 1919.
The order of Masons, Eastern Stars and the Knights of Pythias attended the services, and at the graveside, the services were in charge of the Masonic order.
Pall bearers were Harry Worth, president of the Monroe State bank; George Orcutt, farmer; J. Andeweg, secretary Monroe Commercial club; Dr. L. D. Anderson, dentist; J. A. Murray, grocer and Jerome Coakley, contractor.
The flowers were in charge of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Long, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Roberts and Mrs. J. R. Crumpacker. During the services, “The Old Rugged Cross’ was sung by Mrs. Mark I. Shaw and Mrs. O. M. Wilson, with Mrs. R. B. Gloyd at the piano. An instrumental selection, Dvork’s “New World symphony,” was given by Mrs. Gloyd.
