Wilma Jess, 83, of Goodyear, Ariz., formerly of Newton, died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. A celebration of Wilma’s life will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Memorials in Wilma’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Wilma, the daughter of Howard and Anna (Tice) Birkenholz, was born Oct. 30, 1932, in rural Monroe. She graduated from Newton High School in 1951. Wilma was united in marriage with Delmar Jess Sept. 3, 1955, in Newton, where they made their home for many years. Wilma did all the in-house printing at Winpower for many years. She was a member of the Rock Creek Ikettes and the American Legion Auxiliary. Wilma enjoyed bowling and golfing at Westwood, where she was the club champion many years. Thirty years ago, Wilma moved to Arizona.

Those left to honor Wilma’s memory are her children, Duane (Pam) Jess of Newton and Debbie (Jeff) Ross of Goodyear; grandchildren, Ashley (Tony) Van Wyk of Sully, Abby (E.J.) Peterson of McPherson, Kan., Shelby (D.J.) Shannon of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cody Ross of Goodyear; and her great-grandson, James Van Wyk.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delmar Jess; and her two brothers, Hubert Birkenholz and Donald Birkenholz. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa 3 Mar 2016.
