Services Held
Funeral services for John M. Atwood, 70, of Newton, were held August 18, 1997, at the Wallace–Pence Funeral Home. Burial was in Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
Mr. Atwood died of complications of a stroke August 14 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center.
A lifelong resident to Newton, he was the son of William and Bessie Trotter Atwood and was born August 5, 1918, in Newton. Mr. Atwood graduated from Newton High School in 1936.
He married Maxine L. Acklin on June 24, 1967, at First Lutheran Church in Newton.
Mr. Atwood was Master Sgt. In the Army Signal Corps from 1939 to 1945 during World War II. He was employed at the Maytag Company for 30 years before retiring in 1976 as a general supervisor in the machine shop.
Mr. Atwood was a member of the Izaak Walton league and a member of the Maytag Management Club.
Survivors include his wife Maxine of Newton, two stepsons, Larry James of Cedar Rapids and Curt James of Newton, three daughters and a son–in–law, Sharon Atwood of Phoenix, Arizona, Lorraine and Jeff Potter of Newton and Myrle Atwood of Carlisle, two stepdaughters, Barbara Engle of Cedar Rapids and Sharon Masters of Monroe, two sisters, Ruby Mulbrook of Newton and Virginia McDaniels of Newton; and ten grandchildren and ten great–grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert Atwood, a daughter, Angie, and two brothers, Everett and Victor Atwood.
