Hawkins’ Services Held Wednesday
Services for Burton Riley Hawkins, 25, his two daughters, Penny Kay, 4 and Stephanie Day, 2, and his sister, Jane Hawkins, 19, all of Monroe, who were victims of a car-truck crash in Dallas County Saturday, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Monroe United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Warren McFate, minister of the United Methodist Church; the Rev. John Porter, minister of the United Presbyterian Church, and Elder Arthur Nichols of the Latter Day Saints Church officiated. Burial was in Monroe Silent City Cemetery.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his widow, Sharon. He and his sister Jane Annette Hawkins are also survived by a brother, Jackie of Fort Lewis, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Atwood of Perry; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jason Hawkins of Monroe; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gifford of Kellogg.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hawkins, and a sister, Rosalie, in infancy.
Mr. Hawkins was a member of the Monroe Jaycees.
He had been employed by the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Monroe for six years. The day before the accident he had been promoted to manager.
The son of Jason and Agnes Gifford Hawkins, he was born May 14, 1944, at Newton and was a 1963 graduate of New Monroe High School.
He was married to Sharon Fales August 14, 1964, at Monroe.
Pallbearers for Mr. Hawkins were William Van Ee, Marion Uitermarkt, Mike Hoagland, Paul Jordon, Clarence Van Waardhuizen, and Larry Walker.
Penny Kay was born July 15, 1965, in Des Moines, and Stephanie Day was born July 29, 1967 in Knoxville.
Casket bearers for Penny Kay were Donald Palm, Ronald Van Genderen, Melvin DeHaai and David Vande Lune. Casket bearers for Stephanie Day were James Garland, Arthur Bokhoven, Mike Hawkins and Jerry Johnson.
Jane Annette Hawkins was born April 23, 1950, at Monroe, and attended New Monroe high school.
Pallbearers for Jane Hawkins were Donald Slycord, Delmar Van Wyk, Donald Waddle, Robert Hawkins, Don Dickerson and Gene Hanson.
Mrs. Wayne Lubberden was the organist and Mrs. J. M. Dockum was the soloist.
Services for Robert Duane Atwood, 23 and Angela Faye Atwood, 2, of Perry, who were also killed in the accident, were held Tuesday at Johnson Chapel in Newton.
The Rev. Warren McFate, minister of the Monroe United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Mr. Atwood was born August 22, 1946, in Newton and was educated in Newton schools. He was married to Sharon Christine Hawkins March 18, 1966, at Omaha, Nebr.
Mr. Atwood lived in Newton until moving to the Monroe and Prairie City area in 1966 and from there to Perry this year.
Angela Faye is survived by her mother, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Atwood; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jason Hawkins of Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. John Atwood of Newton; great-grandparents, Mrs. Maude Smith of Sunrise Beach, Mo. and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gifford of Kellogg; and a great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Lilly Compton of Davenport.
