Joseph Milligan , 82, Dies Today

Joseph Milligan, 82, died this morning at 8:00 o’clock at his home 223 West Eighth street North, following a lingering illness from a malignant disease of the stomach. Mr. Milligan had been an invalid for the last seven years and was confined to his bed two weeks ago.

He is survived by his divorced wife, who has been caring for him, two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Guthrie and Mrs. Della Sheratt (sic), both of Newton, and a brother, Ed Milligan of Ord, Neb., and a sister, Mrs. Minerva Logsdon of Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Morgan Funeral home with Dr. J. Irvine Walker of the First Congregational church in charge. Interment will be in the Newton Union Cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, October 26, 1933, page 1.

Hold Rites for Joseph Milligan Here Saturday

Funeral services for Joseph Milligan, 82, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Morgan Funeral home, with Dr. J. Irvine Walker of the First Congregational church in charge. Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery.

Music for the rites was furnished by Richard Toedt, who sang, “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” He was accompanied by Mrs. Toedt.

Those serving as pallbearers were Clarence, Guy and Harry Logsdon and Lawrence, Earl and Harold Milligan.

Mr. Milligan died Thursday morning at his home, 223 West Eighth street North, following a lingering illness.
He was born in Wisconsin [sic-Ohio] in 1851, the son of Joseph [sic - Jacob] and Maria (Hopkins) [sic-Hopton] Milligan [sic-Milliken]. When only seven years of age he came to Jasper county and made his home in this county until his death.

Surviving relatives include his divorced wife; two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Guthrie and Mrs. Della Sheratt, both of Newton; a brother, Ed Milligan of Ord, Neb., and a sister, Mrs. Minerva Logsdon of Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, October 30, 1933.
