Those left to honor John's memory are his wife, Connie of Newton; children, Penny Rasmussen, Dan DeGreef, Bonnye Varland, Debbie Swihart and Mark DeGreef; his seven grandchildren, Tracy (Jimmy Fane) Rasmussen, Kerry (Jason) Heryford, Jon (Sara) DeGreef, Jeff DeGreef, Jason DeGreef, Sara (Chris) Jansen and Kris (Kasey) Swihart; eight great-grandchildren, his sisters-in-law, Freda DeGreef, Teddy Van Hoosen, Mary (Mark) Altemeier, Janet (Monte) Rinehart, Betty (Regan) Brodersen and Diane (Mark) Blackwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Jon Thomas DeGreef; two sisters, Elizabeth and Bertha DeGreef; and four brothers, Martinis, Henry in infancy, William "Bill" and Jake DeGreef.

John served his country in the U. S. Army during WW II.

John was a farmer, farming in rural Newton.

September 19, 1922 ~ January 7, 2016 (age 93)

John DeGreef, 93, of rural Newton, died on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Park Centre in Newton. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends with a coffee time in the social room at the funeral home immediately following the memorial service. A private family burial will be at the Slagel Cemetery in rural Newton.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Courthouse Christmas Lighting Fund, the Newton 4th of July Fireworks Fund or to the Newton FFA Chapter and may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory, or they may be mailed to the funeral home, please add Attn: DeGreef Family on the envelope.
