Clifford Ray Schwarz, 79, of Baxter, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, in Mesa, Ariz., following a brief illness. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20 at Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter with Reverend Teressa Clark officiating. A visitation will follow the memorial service from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Bethany Church fellowship hall. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Clifford was born Aug. 7, 1936, in Newton, to John and Mabel (Hammer) Schwarz. He attended and graduated from Newton High School in 1954. Following school Clifford went to work for Maytag and joined the Iowa Air Guard. He married Darlene Krampe on June 30, 1957, and the couple relocated to Baxter, where they raised their family. He retired from the Air Guard with 21 years of service and Maytag after 30 years of service. In later years Clifford and Darlene began farming their family farms. Clifford was very active and was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ where he was president of the church board, a car club, Baxter City Council, Baxter Economic Development and Jasper County Economic Development board member. His hobbies included spending time with his family, traveling including visiting all 50 states, Australia and more than 20 countries in Europe, camping, planning bus trips, playing cards, farming, woodworking, cooking and helping others by paying it forward.

Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 58 years Darlene; daughters Brenda Schwarz and Carla (Jim) Brewer; grandsons Alex Brewer and Blake Brewer; sister Shirley Heck; brother Frank Schwarz; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Bethany United Church of Christ or the Clifford Schwarz Memorial Fund for the family to make various donations with at a later date.
