Charles Wayne Smith, 93, of Newton died on Thursday, December 10, 2015, at Newton Health Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 17, 2015, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service and again after the service with a lunch at the funeral home. Memorials in Wayne’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Wayne, the son of Charles and Agnes (Gibson) Smith, was born on December 21, 1921 in rural Jasper County. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Wayne was united in marriage with Norma Jeanne Lockhart on December 31, 1943 in Missouri. His working career began helping farm with different farmers in the area. In addition to farming he had an over 30-year career working in the factory for the Maytag Company. For 13 of those years he also worked part time at the Newton Foundry. After retirement, Wayne helped with his son, Doug’s company, Smith Lawn Care. Wayne enjoyed doing yard work and going to his children and grandchildren’s activities.

Those left to honor Wayne’s memory are his children, Carolyn (Chuck) Etter of Clarion, Gary (Toba) Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Doug (Beth) Smith of Newton; son-in-law, Denny Purtilo of Newton; his 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Helen Faidley of Prairie City, Chris Smith of Newton, and Judy (Dale) Berg of Colfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanne on December 12, 2014; his daughter, Barb Purtilo; grandson, Kevin Purtilo; and his siblings, Lawrence Smith, Ilis Hodgson, Forrest “Frosty” Smith, Dennis Smith, Bill Smith, and Jim Smith. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 10 Dec 2015.
