Hazel A. Rice Services to Be Held Saturday

Funeral services for Hazel A. Rice, 86 of 600 N. 3rd Ave. E., a resident of Newton since 1930 and a teacher in the Newton schools from 1930 until 1960, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church.

Dr. Richard Bentziner, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Bussey Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home after 5 p.m. today.

Survivors are a nephew and wife, John P. and Bobbie Newman of Burlington; three great-nieces and their husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip (Suzanne) Willem of Burlington, Maj. and Mrs. Ronald (Jane) Bowlyow of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mr. and Mrs. Steve (Jonnie) Tiemeier of Burlington; and six great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Dora Newman.

Miss Rice was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter and life member of the Susannah Guild, now called Susannah Circle, a life member of the Iowa Educational Association and the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Miss Rice started teaching in rural schools near Percy and Flagler. She also taught in Otley and Bussey before going to Gowrie as a first grade teacher in 1920. She had taught in Iowa for approximately 48 years.

The daughter of William H. and Hulda Lisky Rice, she as born Oct. 15, 1891 in Oskaloosa, was graduated from Bussey Community High School and Drake University in Des Moines.

She died Tuesday at the Skiff Memorial Hospital. ~ Newspaper unknown, possibly The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, Thurs 6 Apr 1978.
