Rachel Roush Hummel was born, January 7, 1868 in her grandfather’s house, one mile north and east of Danville, Highland County, OH.

At the age of nine months, came with her father, mother, & family in the old fashioned covered wagons to Marion County, IA. Lived two years in a log house back in a field, then to the farm across the road from Charley Roders, till I was old enough to make my own way.

On May 4, 1887, was united in marriage to Hugh Montgomery Hummel. To this union four children were born, Hoyes of Newton, Edith of Monroe; Omar of Newton; 12 grandchildren & great-grandchildren; Robert Roush, my own brother, Roscoe, Tom, & Elmer Roush; Bessie, Annie, Lucy & Pearl; half brothers & sisters; the husband & oldest son preceded her in death, have been a Baptist since 1886, have always loved Sunday school & church.
