Mr. H. M. Hummel, after an illness of three weeks, died at his home Friday evening at 10 p.m. Mr. Hummel had been in poor health since last February, suffering with hardening of the arteries.

Hugh M. Hummel had a large circle of friends who sincerely sympathize with the relatives in their sorrow. We know of no enemies he ever made. He was genial, companionable, sympathetic, kind hearted and generous. You could always count on “Gum” as he was more familiarly known, helping with any worthy deed or enterprise.

Hugh Montgomery Hummel, a son of Lewis and Lucinda Hummel was born February 15, 1861 on what is known as the old homestead farm, 5 miles northwest of Monroe, IA and died at his home in Monroe, October 31, 1913 at the age of 52 years, 8 months and 16 days.

He was the fifth child of a family of 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls namely John W, James M, Henry R, George F, Hugh M, Carrie O, Charles, Nannie E, and Fannie, all of whom are yet living except John W. He was united in marriage to Rachel Roush May 4, 1887 to whom were born 4 children. The eldest, Lewis, died in his sixth year, Hoyes, Edith, and Omar still survive, who with the mother are deeply grieved with the loss of a loving father and husband.

The funeral was held at the Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., the services being conducted by Rev. Sharpe of the Presbyterian Church. Music was furnished by the Baptist choir and D. C. Phillips sang a beautiful solo. The pallbearers were Messrs. Geo. Orcutt, Ralph Hendershot, Jas. Wolcott, Tom Cooper, J. H. Cochrane and E.O. Garrett. The family wish to express the thankfulness to the neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted during the sickness and death of our dear husband and father.
