Howard W. Bowie, 82, of Altoona passed away on August 3, 2014 at Altoona Nursing and Rehab of Parkinson's Disease with Diffuse Lewy Body.

Howard William, the eldest son of Martin Howard and Hilda (Schumann) Bowie grew up in rural Jasper County. He attended Newton High School where he was an outstanding athlete. In 1951, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. In 1963, he joined Cities Service Oil Co., which later became Gulf Oil. In 1971, Howard formed his own oil company, Bowie Oil of Pleasant Hill. The company served the South East Polk Community with petroleum products for 25 years until his retirement in 1996. One of Howard's major interests was Little League and he volunteered as a coach and District Assistant Administrator as well as Administrator until his retirement in 1994. During 1992, Howard served as President of the Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce. Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Altoona Nursing and Rehab for their years of loving care.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; granddaughter, Megan Bowie and her mother, Laura Bowie; brothers, John of Runnells and Thom of Newton; and sister, Judy Blom of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Andrew; parents; sisters, Vivian McCurry of Knoxville and Inez Mortley of Albuquerque, NM; and brother, Roger Bowie of Riverside, CA.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW, Altoona with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Private family burial will take place at Zoar Cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be directed to the Zoar Cemetery Association in Howard's name.
