M. Howard Bowie, 86 of Newton, died Sunday April 25 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Mike Johnson, pastor of First Christian Church in Kellogg officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Friends may call after 8:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial in Mr. Bowie's name will be accepted.

The son of M.K. and Arvilla Vivian Hummel Bowie, he was born November 22, 1912, in Fort Dodge. He married Hilda Agnes Schumann October 4, 1930 in Princeton, MO. A longtime resident of Newton, Mr. Bowie worked as a farmer and was employed as a mechanic by Dunitz-Gralnek Garage and Axtell Ford. He was a member of the BPOE Lodge No. 1270, Moose Lodge No. 923, Izaak Walton League, Jasper County Farm Bureau, Jasper County Bowling Association, Oakridge Grange, Master Mechanics Association and he was an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include four sons and two daughters-in-law, Howard W. and Marian of Des Moines, Roger M. of Calimesa, CA, John M. & Verna of Runnells and Tom of Newton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Inez Mortley of Oklahoma City, OK, Vivian and Jerry McCurry of Knoxville and Judy and Russ Blom of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; two sisters, Rosslyn Stewart and Mary Thurman, both of Newton; a brother and sister-in-law, Leland "Pete" and Charlene of Denver, CO, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a grandson and two brothers.
