Mrs. Ethel Smith Dies at Her Home; Services Thursday

Mrs. Ethel Hickman Smith, 82, of 1055 Eighth St. in Des Moines, a teacher in the Newton area for several years, died Monday evening at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Toland Funeral Home.

The Rev. Virgil Shickell, minister of the United Brethren Church of Laurel, will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Toland Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today.

Mrs. Smith is survived by two brothers, Earl Hickman and Walter Hickman, both of Newton; and two sisters, Mrs. Maude Bulfer of Laurel and Mrs. Don Bishop of Faribault, Minn.

She was a homemaker and taught school for several years.

Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 13, 1885 at Clark, Mo. She lived in Des Moines for 56 years. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, Tuesday, March 28, 1967, page 8.

Services Held for Former Teacher

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Hickman Smith, 82, of Des Moines, a Newton area teacher for many years, were held this afternoon at the Toland Funeral Home.

The Rev. Virgil Shickell, minister of the Laurel United Brethren Church, conducted the services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.

Marion Welle, the soloist, was accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Paul Murdy.

Pallbearers were Almon Moffit, Marion Moffitt, Lindley Moffitt, Cecil Moffitt, Arthur Deutsch and Leo Toedt.

Mrs. Leo Toedt and Mrs. Norman Harpole were in charge of flowers.
