Earl Hickman Dies Sunday; Rites Thursday

Earl Hickman, 80, 320 E. 8th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1956, died Sunday evening at Skiff Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. L. H. Steiner, pastor of the Community Heights Alliance Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today.

Survivors are his wife, Kitty; two grandsons, Tom Pieper of Sacramento, Calif., Jim Pieper of Colfax; a granddaughter, Mrs. Jellene Pieper Krebs of Sacramento, Calif., two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Bulfer of Laurel and Mrs. Don (Mae) Bishop of Faribault, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Walter (Gladys) Hickman of Newton.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Pieper in 1946, a brother, Walter Hickman, and a sister, Mrs. Ethel Smith.

Mr. Hickman was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge and the Jasper County Farm Bureau.

A farmer, Mr. Hickman had retired in 1956. Following his retirement he took up wood working as a hobby, making furniture and violins.

The son of James Harvey and Jemima Green Hickman, he was born Aug. 7, 1890 on a farm 7 miles northwest of Newton in Sherman Township and attended Normal College in Newton.

He was married to Kitty Green Dec. 25, 1912 at the home of her parents near Clark, Mo. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, Wednesday, June 30, 1971, page 6.
