Mrs. Hickman, 82, Dies Wednesday

Jasper County Woman Dies Following Several Months Illness

Metz – Mrs. J. Harvey Hickman, 82, of Sherman township, died Wednesday at 8 p.m. at her farm home where she had lived for nearly 50 years.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. from the Murdoch funeral home by Dr. J. Irvine Walker of the Newton Congregational church. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.

Long Illness
Mrs. Hickman had been in failing health since the care of a nurse since that time.

Jamima Catherine Green was born in Sturgeon, Mo., June 1, 1853, the youngest and the last surviving member of a family of nine children.

At the age of 30 years she came from Missouri to Jasper county, where she met James Harvey Hickman and became his bride in February 1884. [note: marriage records say they were married Dec 20, 1883] Five children survive this union.

Longtime Residents

The couple lived in Missouri for a short time following their marriage, but soon returned to Jasper county and purchased the present farm, located seven miles northwest of Newton on the gravel road between this city and Ira. Here they spent the remainder of their lives. Mr. Hickman’s death occurring in 1931.

Mrs. Hickman is survived by her five children. Mrs. Ethel Smith of Des Moines, Mrs. Maude Bufler of laurel, Mrs. Mae Bishop of West Concord, Minn., Earl, of south of Newton, and Walter, who with his wife made his home with Mrs. Hickman. Three grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, April 25, 1935.
