Bertha Grimes Weber, 77, died Sept. 12, 2014, in Mesa, Ariz., after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born July 3, 1937 in Allerton, she was the daughter of Cleve and Faye Grimes, formerly of Prairie City. She married Joseph Slaughter II in 1960, he died in 1966. She married Richard Weber and they later divorced. Known as Bert to her family and friends, she graduated from Prairie City High in 1955, and immediately attended nursing school in Des Moines to become a registered nurse. Bert’s early career as an emergency room nurse spanned various states throughout the Midwest. Eventually settling in Phoenix, Ariz., in the early 1980s. Bert worked in the emergency room at Maryvale Medical Center for the next 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joseph; siblings Ruth Grimes Eckrich, Donald Grimes and Robert Grimes.
She is survived by her son Joseph Slaughter III, his wife Martha, daughters and two sons-in-law, Elizabeth (Diego) Vera, Rebecca Berendsen, Elizabeth (Conner) Hunt, and Alexandra Slaughter; siblings, Bonnie Worley of Burlington, Linda Kempf of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael Grimes of Reno, Nev., David Grimes of Dover, Tenn., and Steven Grimes of New London; and many nieces and nephews.
Private services will be in Michigan. (Bert was to be buried at Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor, Michigan.)
