Van Zee, Terry – 1952-2014

Terry Van Zee, 62, of Boulder, Colo., formerly of Prairie City, died Sept. 15, 2014, in Boulder, Colo. Memorial services were Sept. 19 at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder and Sept. 23 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines with burial at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.
Terry was born on April 24, 1952 in Des Moines to Herman Van Zee and Katherine Vanderhart Van Zee. He graduated as valedictorian from Prairie City High School in 1970, and Central College in Pella with a degree in physics in 1974. Terry was united in marriage with Lois Ann Venhuizen on June 29, 1974 in Fulton, Ill. Terry worked with the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller in Bismarck, ND and later, for Pella Corporation as a Customer Service Manager. Terry was an active musician throughout his life, singing as a teenager, playing in a college band called Third Floor John, singing in church and community choirs. He volunteered his talents to the Songs of Love Foundation for 10 years. Terry also enjoyed photography, hiking, fishing and anything involving the outdoors. His faith was always an important part of his life – serving as an elder, deacon, volunteer, choir member and missionary. He spent his last years volunteering at church, hospitals and for the hearing-impaired.
Terry is survived by his parents, Herman and Katherine Van Zee of Prairie City; son, Josh (Andrea) Van Zee of Ft. Collins; daughter, Sarah (Patrick) Jensen of Denver, Colo.; sister Sandra (Robert) Wagaman of Prairie City; brothers Kent (Diane) Van Zee of West Des Moines; Alan Van Zee of Kauai; and Joel (Sarah) Van Zee of Walnut, Calif.; and grandson, Carter Van Zee of Ft. Collins, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, in June of 2007.
A cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services in Longmont, Colo. Contributions may be made to the Songs of Love Foundation through Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.
