Robert Bryant Nelson, 82, of Park Centre in Newton died of respiratory failure Monday, Oct. 20, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton with Pastor Michael Dack officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

A family visitation will be held following the memorial service. Memorials will be accepted in his name to the Congregational United Church of Christ or to Jasper County Historical Society.

The son of Harry Earl and Bonnie Belle (Bryant) Nelson, he was born July 18, 1921, in Newton. He graduated with the Newton Senior High School Class of 1939 and earned a bachelor's of science degree in engineering from Iowa State University. On Oct. 16, 1942, he married Harriet J. Woodrow in Newton.

Mr. Nelson was an engineer for the Maytag Company for 30 years and retired in 1986. He was a member of the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ, Ducks Unlimited, Maytag Management Club and Jasper County Historical Society. He enjoyed hunting and did a considerable amount of work in dismantling, moving and restoring the Museum's 1975 barn.

Survivors include his wife; a son, John Nelson of Newton; a daughter, Ellen Pierson of Urbandale; one grandson; and a sister, Ellen N. Walter of Clarendon Hills, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy A. Freshwater; and a brother, Donald B. Nelson. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Wed 22 Oct 2003.
