Helen Walker Bates, 76, San Luis Obispo, Calif., a former resident of the Newburg area, died Tuesday, June 8, of a diabetic condition and heart attack.

Memorial services and burial were held at Los Osis Valley Memorial, with Reis Funeral Home of San Luis Obispo in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of O.P. and Bertha Walker, she was born Dec. 11, 1916, near Newburg. She was a 1934 graduate of Newburg High School and a 1936 graduate of the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

She is survived by five children, David Ford of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Joyce Albright of Burbank, Calif., Myra Elder of San Bernardino, Calif., Dwight Ford of Marblemount, Wash., and Elaine Simer of San Luis Obispo; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Winifred Koger of Deming, N.M., and Wilma Grout of Newton.
