After a hard fought battle, Marie Fern Bookout died July 18, 2015, in the presence of her family, at Nelson Manor in Newton. Passing on the eve of her 87th birthday, she was born July 19, 1928, in Ness City, Kan. The family weathered the dust bowl before moving to Missouri, and finally settling in Iowa.

Fern worked at Maytag for 37 years retiring in 1988. In her retirement she enjoyed traveling, especially making many trips to Branson. When in Newton, she volunteered much of her time to the RSVP.

She was united in marriage to Henry “Hank” Bookout in Kansas City, Kan., in 1965.

Those left to remember her are her daughter, Connie Hesse; her sons, Frank (Mary) Dawson, Mark Nalevanko and Chris Bookout; her many step-children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hank; her daughter Sheren Martin; her parents Glenn and Ruth Ross; a sister Betty Katherine in infancy; and sons-in-law, Micheal Martin and Pete Hesse.

A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday July 24 at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. Condolences may be sent to 1746 W. Fourth St. N., Unit 1, Newton, IA 50208 in care of Connie Hesse.
