BAXTER – Roy E. Halferty, 89, a resident of Colonial Manor in Baxter since 1981 and a former resident of Newton, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 29, at the Manor.

Graveside rites will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Rev. Frederick Kramer, retired Newton rector, will conduct services.

Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Survivors are three sons, Robert of Newton and Joe and Rex, both of Marietta, Okla.; three daughters, Joanna Lanphier of Vancouver, Wash., Maxine Kubath of Burlington, Wis., and Kathleen Freeman of Newton; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Alice, four grandchildren, eight sisters and a brother.

Mr. Halferty, who had served in the Marine Corps, had been employed b the Maytag Co., Automatic Washer Co., Earl May Seed Store and Newton Furniture.

The son of Squire and Ida Estes Halferty, he was born March, 18, 1901 in Hedrick and attended Hedrick Schools.

He was married to Alice Bond in December, 1926, in Sigourney.

Mr. Halferty farmed in Washington and Keokuk Counties until moving to Newton in 1947. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Wed 30 Jan 1991.
