PRAIRIE CITY – Gertrude Dykstra Birkenholz, 87, a longtime resident of the Prairie City area, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City.

The Rev. Al Kinrade, pastor of the Prairie City United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Waveland Cemetery in Prairie city.

Visitation with the Family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the church will be accepted.

Survivors are her husband, Louis; a son, Dale of Normal, Ill.; two daughters, Marjorie Thompson of Newton and Joyce Birkenholz of Bryan, Texas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle Timmons of Prairie City and Wilma Dean of Ottumwa; and a brother, John Dyskstra of Altoona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Birkenholz was a member of the Church of the Brethren, south of Prairie City.

The daughter of Garrett and Mattie Van Ostrum Dyskstra, she was born Aug. 26, 1903 near Pella and was a 1922 graduate of Pella Community High School.

She was married to Louis Birkenholz Oct. 6, 1927 in Des Moines. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Wed 2 Jan 1991
