M. Ruth (Gates) Hill Appleby, 97, of Newton died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m., Wednesday until the time of service at the funeral home. The family will also greet friends following the services with a light lunch at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First Presbyterian Church may be left at the funeral home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home; please add, Attn: Appleby Family on the envelope.

Those left to honor Ruth’s memory are her children, Susan (Tom) Anderson of Newton and David B. (Eileen) Hill of Des Moines; her step-sons, Charlie (Judy) Appleby of Shawnee, Kansas and David (Linda) Appleby of Cherokee; five grandchildren, Carrie Hill (Mark Stanton), Debbie Hill, Julie (Fred) Tingle, Ben Anderson and Holly (Jim) Clayton; and her six great-grandchildren, Noah Stanton, Georgia Hill, Paige Hill, Sarah and Sidney Tingle and Calvin Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Alton Hill; second husband, Delmar Appleby; step-son, Larry Appleby; and her brother, Sumner E. Gates. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Mon 15 Sept 2014.
