Funeral services for C. Edith Smith Hart, 91, of Heritage Manor Care Center, formerly of 715 W. 4th St. N., a longtime resident of Newton, were held today, June 10, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation with the family was held Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Heart Association will be accepted.

She died Friday at Skiff Medical Center of pneumonia.

Surviving are a son, Elvin E. Hart of Newton and a step-daughter, Evelyn Hart of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jesse S. Smith and Vester E. Smith, an infant brother, Henry, three sisters Sarah Daniels, Minnie (Mrs. Dean) Smith and Alice (Mrs. Raymond) Smith.

Mrs. Hart had taught in rural Jasper County Schools and later in Washington and Lincoln Elementary Schools in Newton

The daughter of Edward B. and Charlotte Castleman Smith, she was born Sept. 7, 1899 on a farm near Killduff, was graduated from Newton Community High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls.

She was married to Elvin E. Hart Aug 8, 1938 in Atlantic
