Vernon W. Harger

Funeral services for Vernon W. Harger, 71, of 2444 N. 4th Ave. W. No. 8, will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. Jim Olson, pastor of the Zoar Church in rural Newton, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today where the family will be present from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Memorials in Mr. Harger’s name will be accepted.

He died of heart failure Saturday evening, Nov. 16, at Skiff Medical Center.

Born Feb. 20, 1925 in Columbia, Iowa, he was the son of Frank and Edith I. Burt Harger.

A resident of Newton since 1942, he married Ruth E. Dunaway May 1, 1944, in Newton.

Mr. Harger was employed at the Maytag Company following high school. He later worked for the highway department and then the street department in Newton until his retirement in 1990. He also attended the Zoar Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, and two daughters-in-law, Donald and Mary Harger and Larry and Donna Harger, all of Newton, and John Worthington of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Marvin of Wichita, Kan., and Frank of Newton; and two sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Dale) Mohler of Newton and Norma Counter of Kansas City, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
