Services for Thor Petersen were held Friday, December 7, 2001, at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Sam Johnson, L.L.M., officiating the services. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Stonington, Michigan.
Thor Petersen, formerly of Newton died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan. Thor was a resident of Rapid River, Michigan.
The son of Thor and Gwen Becker Petersen, he was born August 20, 1936, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1959, he married the former Gail Stevens on Feb. 14, 1959. He received his M>A> and Ph.D. from Michigan State Univeristy. He spent his entire career as an educator where he was a teacher, principal and director of the Whitmer Human Resources Center for the Pontiac School district in Pontiac, Michigan. He was superintendent of the Lake Ville School District in Otisville, Michigan, the Newton Community School District, and the Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District in Bay City, Michigan. Upon retirement in 1992, he and his wife moved to Rapid River, Michigan, where they built a home in Stonington. Since Living in Stonington, he has been an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Stonington Booster Club and Gladstone Golf Club. He also served as a board member of the Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Association.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Jim Rahoi of Marquette, Michigan, Kristin and Brett Brodersen of Monroe, Iowa, and Karla and Jerry Nash of Kingwood, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Thor S. and Lissa of Cary, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Martin and Judy of Pontiac, Michigan; a sister-in-law, Marian of St. Ignace, Michigan, an aunt, LaVerne Recker of Rapid River, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
