COLFAX – Iola Orena Phelps Bates, 79, a resident of Colfax since 1976, died Saturday, March 2, at Clearview Manor in Prairie City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Colfax.

The Rev. Michael Orthel, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery near Newburg.

Friends may call at the Walters Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax after noon today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorials to the church or to the Des Moines General Hospital will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons, Charles of Ottumwa and Dean of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Carol Ann (Mrs. LeRoy) Van Elsen of Colfax; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harvey, three brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Bates, a member of the United Methodist Church in Colfax, had been employed by the Grinnell General Telephone Co.

The daughter of Charles Elmer and Emily Ann Shaw Phelps, she was born Jan. 20, 1912 in Colesburg and was a 1929 graduate of Colesburg High School.

She was married to Harvey James Bates Jan. 2, 1937 in Solon.

Mrs. Bates also had resided in Grinnell and Newburg. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Mon 4 Mar 1991.
