Newton Man Killed Fell In Elevator Shaft

C. W. Boles, Electrical Stepped In Open Shaft at Hotel Maytag

C. W. Boles, 41, an electrician of Newton, died Sunday morning from injuries he received, when he fell from the first floor of the elevator shaft to the bottom, at Hotel Maytag, on Saturday.

Mr. Boles was proprietor of the Boles Electrical Shop and had gone to the hotel to change some wiring in an apartment.

Mr. Boles was working on the wiring and fixtures of an apartment on the fourth floor of the hotel, investigation of the accident revealed, leaving the building about 9:30 to take some of his materials back to his shop. According to Mrs. Boles, he left the shop to return to the hotel about 9:30 o'clock, and was believed to have fallen into the shaft shortly after that time.

Leaving the fourth floor of the hotel, it was learned, Mr. Boles rode the freight elevator to the first floor, where he left the building through the alley entrance to the elevator, leaving the door open behind him. A few minutes later, Earl Lynch, painter, who also was working in the apartment, rung for the elevator, which works automatically bringing it back to the fourth floor. Mr. Lynch then went down to the first floor, noticed the open door, and closed it because of the cold draft entering the building, and then took the elevator back to the fourth floor.

Shortly after that, Mr. Boles is believed to have come back to the hotel, raised the alley door and stepped off into the shaft, evidently not noticing the elevator was gone. The injured man was discovered in the elevator pit, having fallen a distance of from 15 to 20 feet, by Don Annis, night bellboy at the hotel, Jack Dietz, hotel engineer, and night Police officer W. F. Horn. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 14 Jan 1932.
