Velma Bernice Arndt Messick

Velma Bernice Arndt Messick, 81, of 1103 N. 5th Ave. E., died of respiratory failure, today, March 21, at U.S.A. Health Care Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in downtown Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where family will be present from 6:30 o 8 p.m. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church will be accepted.

The daughter of Jacob Henry Arndt and Ruth Hiderbrand, she was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Montezuma. She attended Newton Schools. She married Orie Albert Messick Sept. 12, 1941, in Memphis, Mo.

A lifelong resident of Newton, she was employed by the Maytag Company in the dryer assembly department. Mrs. Messick was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UAW Local No. 997 and enjoyed her family and cooking.

Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Dean and Colleen of Newton; a daughter, Linda Lou Messick Cross of Monroe; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma Irene and Victor Machin of Houston, Mo. and Elizabeth Ann and Albert Lee of Braymer, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Tues 21 Mar 2000.
