NEWTON, IA. – Vella M. Helsene, 92 of Newton died of cancer Friday at the Newton Health Care Center. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, with burial at Union Chapel Cemetery in Ira.

Mrs. Helsene was born in Baxter and was a lifelong Jasper County resident. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Des Moines and the Ira Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, Wendell of Texas; five sisters, Irene Helsene of St. Paul, Minn., Helen Bosak of Frederic, Wis., Hazel Crittenden of Galesburg, Mich., and Doris Bortz and Delores Armstrong, both of Newton; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Newton Health Care Center Activity Fund. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa Sun 20 Jan 1991.

Vella M. Helsene

Funeral services for Vella M. Logsdon Helsene, 92, of the Newton Health Care Center, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, were held today, Jan. 21, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

Rev. Darrel Kois, assistant pastor of the Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Des Moines, conducted services. Burial was in Union Chapel Cemetery in rural Ira.

Visitation with the family was held Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Newton Health care Center Activity Fund will be accepted.

She died Friday evening at the care center.

Survivors are a son, Wendell of Texas; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Irene (Mrs. Henry) Helsene of St. Paul, Minn., Helen Bosak of Frederic, Wis., Hazel (Mrs. Norman) Crittenden of Galesburg, Mich., and Doris (Mrs. Merle) Borts and Delores Armstrong, both of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lawrence, April 12, 1988, a son, Robert, six sisters and a brother.

Mrs. Helsene, a homemaker, was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church for the deaf in Des Moines, the Ira Garden Club and the CWS of Ira.

The daughter of Charles and Rose Sego Logsdon, she was born May 23, 1898 in Baxter and was a graduate of the Council Bluffs School of the Deaf.

She was married to Lawrence Eric Helsene Sept. 2, 1923 in St. Paul, Minn. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Mon 21 Jan 1991.
