Mrs. Lester L. (Velma F.) Mendenhall, 66, of 714 E. 10th St. N., a resident of Newton for 12 years, died Tuesday evening at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

The Rev. James Conger, pastor of the Newton First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Hugh S. Shiveley, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Memorial contributions to the Skiff Memorial Hospital or the First Baptist Church in Newton will be accepted.

Survivors are her husband, Lester Mendenhall; two sons, Henry O. Butler of Reasoner and Gary F. Smith of Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Van (Darlene) Davis of Grinnell; a step-daughter, Mrs. Maynard (Shirley) Sears of Searsboro; a step-son, Ralph Mendenhall of Jester, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Thelma Mae Wilson of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Smith, July 19, 1959; parents, three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mrs. Mendenhall was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell and the Isabella Brande Guild of the church and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Moose Lodge, Jasper County Women's Bowling Association and Senior Citizens, all of Newton.

A former employee of Swift and Co. and Grinnell Shoe, both of Grinnell, she was employed at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton for 10 years.

The daughter of O. O. and Vernie Bachman Butler, she was born Feb. 7, 1911 at Sidney, Mo.

She was married to Carl Smith June 4, 1930 and to Lester L. Mendenhall Sept. 7, 1963 in Grinnell.
