Bette Stewart Kalsem, 78, of Indianola, passed away on February 5, 2012 after a long illness. Bette was born July 12, 1933 in Newton, IA to Clifford and Nellie Stewart. She attended Iowa State University where she enjoyed her days at the Sigma Kappa Sorority. After graduation she married Marion Kalsem and had two daughters.

Bette taught elementary school in Des Moines for 40 years during which time she received her Masters of Education degree from Drake University. She was a dedicated teacher who put much energy into engaging and educating her students. Bette had many interests and in earlier years she enjoyed watching her daughters take part in horse shows. She also enjoyed gardening, attending opera and theater performances, traveling and caring for many pets. Her greatest joy in recent years was spending time with her beloved granddaughter, Laila Kamhawy.S

he will be missed by her daughter, Karol (Amr) Kamhawy of Waukee; daughter, Kristine (Mark) Schulman of Alabama; brother, Robert Stewart of North Carolina and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 8 at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League or the John Stoddard Cancer Center. ~ The Iles Funeral Home, Des Moines, Iowa 5 Feb 2012.
