F. L. Maytag, Newton Manufacturer, Died In California
Funeral Services Held Tuesday Afternoon
For Newton’s First CitizenFred L. Maytag, of Newton, head of the nationally known Maytag Washing Machine Company, passed away Friday morning, March 26th, in the Good Samaritan hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., following an illness of about a month with heart trouble.
At his bedside were his sister, Mrs. Martha Autry, of Marshalltown and his son, L. B. Maytag of Colorado Springs, Colo. Mrs. Maytag died two years ago.
Born in Elgin, Ill., Mr. Maytag came with his parents to Jasper County early in life, spending his boyhood on a farm in northern Jasper County. In reaching manhood he went to Newton, first as an implement salesman, later entering into the lumber business. Disposing of the business he entered into the manufacturing line. For several years he did a thriving business in a band cutter for threshing machines and finally leaving this line for the washing machine industry. This last was where he achieved his greatest success and became a nationally known figure, with his product being used in almost every civilized nation.
Known as a philanthropist, Maytag made liberal gifts to colleges and universities and to his home town, Newton, he never hesitated. A fine $250,000 Y. M.C.A. gift, a Citidel for the Salvation Army, Maytag Park and Swimming Pool, a birthday gift to his employees are a few of the liberal contributions made to Newton.
Mr. Maytag was a member of the Iowa state senate from 1902 to 1912, was Mayor of Newton from 1923 to 1925, the first budget Director of the State of Iowa. He continued to keep an interest in local, state and national government up to the last.
