Obituary – Henry J. Kaldenberg

Henry J. Kaldenberg, apioneer citizen of this county, passed away peacefully at his home just south of this city, on Wednesday morning at 6:10 o’clock, October 29th 1924 at the age of 64 years, 8 months, and 29 days. He had lived in Jasper County for more than forty years.

Mr. Kaldenberg was born in Spike, Holland, January 30th, 1860. He was the second son of Aart and Henrietta Kaldenberg. When at the age of five years, his parents came to America and settled in the city of Keokuk, Iowa; nine months later they moved to Pella, Iowa, where Mr. Kaldenberg grew to manhood. His death is the first in a family of seven brothers and one sister.

On February 12th 1880, he was joined in marriage to Miss Johanna Van Klootwyk at Pella, Iowa. To this union were born ten children, one of whom died in infancy. Shortly after their marriage they came to Prairie City, Iowa, and two years later came to Colfax, where they have since lived with the exception of six months spent in Newton County, Mo., in the summer of 1905.

At the age of 34 years Mr. Kaldenberg became converted to the Christian life and affiliated himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which at the time of his death he was one of the trustees and a member of the quarterly official conference and teacher of the Adult Bible Class in the Sunday School. He was a kind father, good neighbor, always cheerful, ready to give of the best of what he possessed. He always stood for the cause of right and disliked anything that had any evil influence upon the community in which he lived.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow and nine children as follows: Aart, John, Matthew, Virgil, Zenna M. Hogendorn and Henrietta Acton of Colfax; Alice Blain of Osceola, Iowa; Harold of Indianola, Iowa and Minnie Tiffany of Collins, Iowa; together with twenty-three grandchildren, besides six brothers, Frank and Louis of Colfax, Garrett of Monroe, Theodore of Pella, Matthew of Promise City, Iowa, Tunis of Ventura, California and one sister, Margaret BeWalda of Pella, together with other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Methodist Church. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa, Nov. 1924.
