Ida Macy Pemberton

Ida Florence, daughter of Lilburn and Martha Gordon Macy was born near Knightstown, Indiana, November 4th., 1858. Here she spent her childhood and was educated in the nearby Spiceland Academy.

In the autumn of 1880 she came with her parents to Lynnville, Iowa, where she continued the work of teaching, which she had begun in Indiana, teaching continuously until 1897.

She was converted while a young girl and was always greatly interested in the work of the Friends Church, of which she as a loyal member. Especially in the church as well as elsewhere, she willingly used her talent in vocal music. During her years of teaching in the public schools, she was also a teacher and officer in the Sunday school. She was a charter member of the First Christian Endeavor Society organized at Lynnville and was a member of the W. C. T. U. almost from the date of its organization in this state, serving much of the period in the capacity of office. For her devoted service, she was given an honorary life membership in this organization.

August 23rd, 1898, she was married to Rev. Henry C. Pemberton and served with him as pastor’s wife in the meetings at Hubbard, Lynnville and Iowa Falls. While serving the church at the latter place, Henry Pemberton was called home June 12, 1902. Ida Pemberton then returned to Lynnville where she made a home for her mother and daughter, Grace Maurine. After the death of her mother, at the home of her sister, Mrs. E. S. Forsyth at Colfax in 1918, she went to Oskaloosa residing here until November 21st where she quietly slipped away in a manner that fittingly closed a quiet and beautiful life.

A part of her last entry, and also the last words she ever wrote in a record she had been keeping of her birthdays is as follows: “Today I was able to walk across the street and perform my duty as a citizen by voting for the best men available, for the offices to be filled.”

“Bless the Lord O My soul and forget not all his benefits. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities who healeth all thy disease; who redeemeth they life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies. I am so glad he is my savior and redeemer.“

She leaves to mourn her departure, one daughter, Maurine, six step-children, two sisters, and four brothers, two sisters having preceded her to the Heavenly Home. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 4 Dec 1930.
