Dean Thompson, Altoona Took Own Life

Ill Health Is reported Cause Of Former Colfax Man’s Rash Act

Dean Thompson of Altoona committed suicide Sunday morning in the garage of his home, while his family was at church.

After the family left for church, it is reported he went to the neighbors for the milk. After sitting and visiting with the neighbor for a while he returned home, sat the milk on the porch and went around the garage, put a rope around his neck, stepped off the chair he had used to stand on to tie the rope to the rafters, and strangled to death.
Mr. Thompson had been suffering with a nervous trouble and returning from Iowa City the second time where no hope had been given for a recovery he evidently lost his grip on life, thus resulting in the rash act.

For many years the Thompsons were residents of Colfax, he working at the painter’s trade. While here they built the residence property on South Locust Street where the Henry sisters now live. In 1914 the family moved to a farm near Mitchellville. Two years later they moved to Altoona, which place has since been their home.

Besides the bereaved wife, four daughters, Mrs. Rachel Seals of Mason City, Hazel, Frances and June, and one son, Robert, survive. A daughter, Esther, preceded him in death in 1928.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Christian Church at Altoona and burial was had at the Mitchellville Cemetery.

Mrs. Burt Scott, who is a sister of Mrs. Thompson, has been with her since the tragedy. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 31 Dec 1931.
