Monroe School Boy Killed In Auto Crash

Three Other School Children Injured When Autos Collide

Clifford Maddele, 14, student in the Monroe High School, was killed early Monday morning and three of his companions were badly injured when the car they were riding in struck the bumper of another car and over-turned.

The injured children are Phyllis Bowman and Paul Colyn, who suffered fractured collar bones and cuts, and Joy Wilson, whose nose was broken.

The accident happened when Mrs. Hazel Whetstine, who was backing out of a driveway along the high-way stopped on the north side of the road for the car with the children to pass. The Model T Ford the children were driving caught on the bumper of the car driven by Mrs. Whetstine and turned it over.

Coroner James J. Engle, who was in Colfax Monday afternoon, stated that an inquest would be held in a few days, permitting the children to recover from the shock before questioning. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 5 Nov 1931.
