Child Dies After Week’s Illness

Esther LaDema Van Tomme, daughter of Charles A. and Esther Ervin Van Tomme was born May 30, 1934 in Clear Creek Township and departed this life August 27th, 1936 at the Skiff Memorial Hospital, Newton, Iowa, at the tender age of 2 years, 2 months, and 27 days.

Besides her parents, she is survived by a sister Ella Jean (5 Years) a brother, John Eugene, three and one-half, her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Van Tomme, maternal grandmother Mrs. M. J. Ervin, one uncle, several aunts, cousins and a host of friends.

Besides the above, she is survived by two great uncles, Charles Richards, Des Moines, and John I. Hays, Marshalltown.

Her last illness was a brief one, of less than one week. She developed a serious mouth and throat infection and in spite of intense suffering, she was such a patient little soul, complaining very little.

Little LaDema was an unusually loving and affectionate child and her stay with us has seemed far too brief-but the world is sweeter and brighter for having lived here for a while, we shall miss her, but since God must know best, perhaps “sometime, Somewhere, We’ll Understand.”

“A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.”

Those attending the service from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Richards of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. John Hays and family of Marshalltown and relatives from Newton.

Mrs. Z. C. Jones of Ira and Mrs. Clair Pease were in charge of the flowers.

The pall bearers were Stanley Byal, Edwin Russell, Ernest Dow and Charles Erwin.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Earl Plummer with Mrs. Cleo Wall at the piano.

Burial was made in the Greencastle Cemetery. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 3 Sept 1936.
