Death Claimed Hugh Braniff

Well Known farmer south of Colfax Died of Pneumonia

H. A. Braniff, well known farmer living south of Colfax, passed away Saturday morning death resulting from pneumonia, following an attack of influenza. Mr. Braniff has been in failing health for the past year and a half, but until three weeks ago his condition had not been considered serious.

He was an industrious and public spirited man, doing his share always for his neighbors and friends and the community which he called home.

Hugh Braniff was born in Cletermore, Cumberland County, England, September 20th, 1873, and departed this life March 12, 1932, at the age of 58 years and 6 months.

The family moved from England to America when he was ten years of age. After residing in Pennsylvania for two years, they moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Mr. Braniff grew to manhood.

At Des Moines, May 13, 1903, he was united in marriage to Anne Peirick. To this union were born three children.

For the past eighteen years he has been a resident of Colfax, where he engaged in farming.

Three weeks ago, he contracted the flu. Pneumonia set in and caused his death.

Those left to mourn his loss are his wife, the children, Marie, a teacher in the local schools, Wilbur and George, students at Iowa State College; his brother John Braniff of Des Moines; his sister (name torn off) of Colfax; Mrs. (name torn off), Pete Toomey, both of Des Moines. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 14, at nine o’clock, from the Immaculate Conception Church at Colfax, with Rev. T. V. Lawlor in charge. The High Mass was sung by Miss Ruth Cappellar of Colfax and Miss Irene Granquist of Des Moines, accompanied by the church organist, Mrs. George Roehrig.

Interment was made at St. Ambrose Cemetery in Des Moines.

Pall bearers were Messrs Hugh Sloan, James Sloan, Wilford Granquist, John E. Cavanaugh, Frank Pierick of des Moines, and Ernest White of Colfax.
