Mrs. Walter Thompson Dies in Des Moines

Was Former Colfax Resident; Funeral Service Held Here Wednesday

Mrs. Walter Thompson, a former Colfax resident, passed away at the Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines about 3:30 Monday afternoon, following an operation which she underwent Saturday. She had been in poor health for some time and gained little after an operation which she underwent early in the summer.

The family was residents of Colfax until a few years ago when they moved to Des Moines. Mrs. Thompson was a very capable woman and not only managed her home and cared for her children, but while here assisted her husband when he managed the bakery and later clerked at the Fenner store in the dry goods department. Since going to Des Moines she was very successful as manager of the tea room at Oransky’s Department Store.

She took an active interest in the work of the Eastern Star Lodge at Colfax and White Shrine in Des Moines, and in the church and social life of the community.

She is survived by her husband, Walter Thompson of Des Moines, four daughters, Mrs. Gretchen Stockton, Miss Dorothy and Miss Jane Thompson of Des Moines and Mrs. June Williamson of Davenport and one son, Millard Thompson of Des Moines, two brothers, Millard Berkley of Mingo and Judge Lyon of Waterloo.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in Des Moines at the Hamilton Funeral Home and Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from the Methodist Church in Colfax with Rev. E. G. Williams, pastor of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church of Des Moines officiating.

Music was furnished by J. A. Davis, Mrs. Earl Plummer, Mrs. Cleo wall and B. F. Van Dyke. The Eastern Star Lodge attended in a body and gave their ceremony at the conclusion of the sermon.

Interment was had in the Colfax Cemetery.

Pall bearers were Dr. F. E. Boyd, B. A. Brown, E. S. Meckley, J. B. Ryan, Ed Bollhoefer and R. E. Cummings. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 26 Nov 1931.
