Donnell I. Johnston

Donnell I. Johnston, age 77, of Baxter, Iowa, died January 2, 2000, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 6, 2000, at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ, with Rev. Rollin Waters and Rev. Eugene Bucklin officiating. Burial was held at Restland Cemetery, Baxter.

He was born April 21, 1922, at Collins, Iowa the son of John and Neva (Crabb) Johnston. He was raised in the Baxter area graduating from the Baxter Community School in 1941.

He married Betty Ilene Gearhart on June 6, 1942, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He had farmed in the Baxter area most of his life, also owning and operating the Johnston Fertilizer Plant and a trucking business, hauling gravel and agricultural lime.

He was a member of the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ, the Jasper County Farm Bureau, Baxter volunteer Fire dept., a former Mayor and Councilman of Baxter, and was involved with the Baxter Fox Hunter’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Linda (Mrs. Charles) Gauch of Newton; son, Donnie L. Johnston, Baxter; daughter, Janie (Mrs. Richard) Perry, Baxter; sister, Arlene (Mrs. Rex) Butler of Baxter; brother, Robert Johnston, Baxter; Sister, Kathleen (Mrs. Don) Paul of Laurel; and by 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John E. Johnston. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs. 6 Jan 2000.
