Dwayne Groat, 78, died of renal cell carcinoma May 15, 2015 at his home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., surrounded by his wife and five children.

Dwayne was born Dec. 13, 1936 in Fort Calhoun, Neb., to Lola Berka Groat and Richard Groat. He grew up in Newton, Iowa, where he spent his childhood attending school and working as a farmhand. In 1954 he joined the Air Force and was stationed at Sparrevohn Radar Station, Alaska and Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, N.Y.

Dwayne married Shirley Ann Mills Oct. 19, 1957, in Ilion, N.Y. In July 1970, Dwayne and his family relocated to Fort Walton Beach where he was employed by Centel/Sprint for 28 years. Dwayne enjoyed golfing, fishing, coaching youth sports, and tending to the family farm.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert Miller and Greg Bohall; and son, Steven Groat.

He is survived by his wife; and five children, Dr. Scott (Teresa) Groat, Michelle Troutman, Michael (Dorenda) Groat, Teri (Scott) Robinson, and Christopher (Lori) Groat; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Patricia Fryrear and Carla Sutton.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, Fort Walton Beach. Burial will be held in Beal Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Covenant Hospice, 5041 North 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32504.
