George Berry Former Jasper Resident, Dies
George W. Berry, 84, of Grinnell, a former resident of Jasper County, died Monday morning at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Eastside Funeral Home.
The Rev. John C. Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, will conduct services.
Graveside services will be conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial unit at the Ewart Cemetery.
Survivors are two sons, George of lakeside, Calif., and Gene of rural Kellogg; two daughters, Mrs. Orville (Harriet) Hafkey of rural Grinnell and Mrs. Murl (Marjorie) Hatfield of rural Newton; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lettie, Jan. 9, 1973, two daughters, a grandson, two great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.
Mr. Berry was a member of the Grinnell American Legion and the Grinnell Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Berry had operated a blacksmith and welding shop in the Grinnell area.
The son of William and Martha Logan Berry, he was born Nov. 7, 1893 in Grinnell and attended rural schools, southwest of Grinnell.
He was married to Lettie Brownlie April 2, 1919. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Tues 25 Apr 1978.
