Funeral services for Gladyce Berniece Bowans, 75, of Newton will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Prairie City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Reg Merrill, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.

Visitation will be held after noon today with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City is handling arrangements.

Memorials to Jasper County Hospice will be accepted.

Mrs. Bowans died Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Heritage Manor in Newton.

The daughter of Belin V. and Ann Elizabeth Smith Ballard, she was born Aug. 24, 1922, in Percy. She was a 1939 graduate of Monroe High School.

She married Loren Melvin Bowans Feb. 26, 1941.

A longtime resident of Des Moines she lived in Prairie City for two years. She was a resident of Newton for six months.

She was employed by Bankers Life Co. and the Hawaiian Inn Restaurant, both in Des Moines. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, past 4-H Leader and a Scout Leader.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Hella Bowans of Elizabeth City, N.C., Jim and Madeline Bowans of Norfolk, Va. and Robert and Lorraine Bowans of Iowa city; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda German of Mino and Nancy and Joe Mundell of Pleasantville; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Darlene Karr of Otley, Ann Barron of Austin, Texas and Donna Ballard of Christmas, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters; and lifelong companion, Victor Zike. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Oct 1997.
